John Gielgud
Born April 14, 1904, London native John Gielgud made his acting debut at age 17 with one line in the play "Henry V" and ultimately blossomed into one of the 20th century's most esteemed thespians. He racked up scores of Tony, Emmy and Academy Award nominations throughout his long career, winning the Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his unforgettable turn in 1981's Arthur.

Although best known for his onstage interpretations of William Shakespeare works, Gielgud delivered a number of arresting big-screen performances. His film credits include Secret Agent (1936), Julius Caesar (1953, opposite Marlon Brando), Becket (1964) and Shine (1996). No stranger to the small screen, the classical actor co-starred in the acclaimed 1981 miniseries "Brideshead Revisited."

Gielgud made one of his last silver-screen appearances (as the Pope) in 1998's Elizabeth before his death May 21, 2000, at age 96.
