Although best known for his onstage interpretations of William Shakespeare works, Gielgud delivered a number of arresting big-screen performances. His film credits include Secret Agent (1936), Julius Caesar (1953, opposite Marlon Brando), Becket (1964) and Shine (1996). No stranger to the small screen, the classical actor co-starred in the acclaimed 1981 miniseries "Brideshead Revisited."
Gielgud made one of his last silver-screen appearances (as the Pope) in 1998's Elizabeth before his death May 21, 2000, at age 96.
