Julian Schnabel
Julian SchnabelA larger-than-life painter and sculptor known for making public appearances in his pajamas, Julian Schnabel was born Oct. 26, 1951, in Brooklyn, N.Y., and rose to prominence in the New York City art scene of the 1980s and '90s.

Schnabel's feature-film debut, Basquiat (1996), explored the life of his friend and fellow artist Jean Michel Basquiat. Schnabel returned to the film medium with Before Night Falls (2000), a biopic about the life of Cuban poet Reinaldo Arenas, which earned the director a Grand Jury Special Prize at the Venice Film Festival and an Oscar for star Javier Bardem.

But Schnabel has received his greatest acclaim to date for his third feature, The Diving Bell and the Butterfly (2007), a French-language drama that chronicles the life of journalist Jean-Dominique Bauby. The movie netted Schnabel Best Director honors at Cannes, a Golden Globe win and an Oscar nod.
