Born June 8, 1966, in Spring Valley, N.Y., Julianna Margulies spent half her childhood in Europe and the other half in the United States before enrolling at Sarah Lawrence College, where she took her first turn onstage.Margulies's feature-film bow in Out for Justice (1991) led to regular TV work with the dramas "Law & Order" and "Homicide: Life on the Streets." But it was her Emmy-winning turn as head nurse Carol Hathaway on the hospital drama "ER" that made the actress a star, pairing her romantically with small-screen heartthrob George Clooney.
During and after "ER," Margulies clicked off a string of intriguing film roles, including a Hasidic wife in A Price Above Rubies (1998) and the sorceress Morgaine in "The Mists of Avalon" (2001). Returning to series television in 2009, Margulies earned her first Golden Globe and an Emmy nod for "The Good Wife." The role brought her another Golden Globe nomination the following year.
