Born in Surrey, England, on Oct. 1, 1935, Julie Andrews began performing in musicals as a child, making her Broadway debut at age 19. Her theatre success, most famously as Eliza Doolittle in "My Fair Lady," led to steady television and film work. Her first major movie, Mary Poppins (1964), resulted in an Oscar for Best Actress, and she was nominated in the same category a year later for The Sound of Music (1965). After taking a break from film for a TV variety show and nightclub tour, she returned to the big screen, working almost exclusively with her husband (director Blake Edwards) in such films as 10 (1979), S.O.B. (1981), 1982's Victor/Victoria (for which Andrews received another Best Actress Oscar nomination) and That's Life! (1986).
In 2001, Andrews returned to prominence in film with her role as Queen Renaldi in The Princess Diaries, a role she revived for a 2004 sequel.
