Katie Holmes
A fresh-faced girl next door who became as well known for her highly publicized marriage to Tom Cruise as for her intuitive acting abilities, Katie Holmes was born in Toledo, Ohio, on Dec. 18, 1978.

The young actress made her film debut in Ang Lee's The Ice Storm (1997) while she was still in high school, followed by a starring role in Doug Liman's Go. But it was her earnest portrayal of small-town tomboy Joey Potter on the hit series "Dawson's Creek" that earned her instant star status, especially among teen viewers who were drawn to her angst-ridden romance with the show's titular leading man.

When it comes to her acting résumé, Holmes's choices reveal a thirst for variety and quirky characters rather than a desire for mainstream success. Her projects include offbeat comedy-dramas such as Pieces of April, Wonder Boys and Thank You for Smoking as well as the blockbuster Batman Begins.
