Ken Howard
A leading man turned character actor who took a hiatus from his craft to teach law and theater at Harvard University in the 1980s, Ken Howard was born March 28, 1944, in El Centro, Calif. He grew up on Long Island, where his towering height earned him the nickname "Stork" in high school. After a stint at Yale's drama school, Howard debuted on Broadway in 1967 in "Promises, Promises."

Best known for playing the Caucasian coach of a racially mixed basketball team on the TV drama "The White Shadow," Howard scored a Daytime Emmy in 1981 for his performance in the after-school special "The Body Human: Facts for Boys." His supporting turn as Phelan Beale in the HBO drama Grey Gardens brought him his first Emmy win in 2009.

On stage, Howard originated the role of Thomas Jefferson in the musical "1776" (reprising the part for the film version). He also won a 1970 Tony Award for his work in "Child's Play."
