Born with a twin sister in December 1966 in London, Sutherland moved to California when Donald's movie career took off. After dropping out of high school at age 16, Kiefer landed his first notable film role in The Bay Boy (1984) and received high praise for his portrayal of a bully in Stand by Me (1986). He continued with The Lost Boys, two Young Guns films, Flatliners and Bright Lights, Big City.
Sutherland took his first stab at feature directing in 1997 with Truth or Consequences, N.M., after which he opted for a series of memorable supporting roles in films such as Dark City, A Few Good Men and A Time to Kill.
