Born in Athens, Ga., on Dec. 8, 1953, Kim Basinger entered her first beauty pageant at age 16, and by age 20, she was a top-earning model with the Ford Modeling Agency. In 1976, she moved to Los Angeles, where she landed minor television roles. Her big break came with the TV miniseries "From Here to Eternity" (1979), followed shortly by an appearance as a Bond girl in Never Say Never Again (1983). Another pivotal role in Robert Redford's The Natural (1984) and a bare-all performance in 9 1/2 Weeks (1986) -- as well as her portrayal of reporter Vicki Vale in Batman (1989) -- helped cement her superstardom. It wasn't long before she earned a Best Supporting Actress Oscar for playing a femme fatale in L.A. Confidential (1997).
Basinger has continued taking more unconventional dramatic roles, playing Eminem's mother in 8 Mile (2002) and the troubled Marion in The Door in the Floor (2004).
