The daughter of a Royal Navy pilot who perished in an air crash, Kristin Scott Thomas was born May 24, 1960, in Redruth, England. Six years after her father's death, her stepfather, also a pilot, died in a similar crash, and Thomas helped raise her four younger siblings.At 19, Scott Thomas moved to Paris, where she worked as an au pair, enrolled in drama school and began an acting career, playing small roles on stage and television. She appeared in several French and British films but didn't gain international fame until she portrayed Hugh Grant's secretly lovelorn friend in Four Weddings and a Funeral (1994), receiving a BAFTA award for her performance.
The actress's other notable movies include The English Patient (for which she earned Golden Globe and Oscar nominations), The Horse Whisperer (1998), Random Hearts (1999), Gosford Park (2001) and 2009's Nowhere Boy, which netted her another BAFTA nod.
