Lone Scherfig
An acclaimed Danish director of the Dogme 95 school of filmmaking, Lone Scherfig was born in Copenhagen on May 2, 1959. Her great-uncle Hans Scherfig was a celebrated author and artist in his native Denmark.
Employing the stripped-down lensing techniques of Dogme 95, Scherfig made a splash -- albeit a quiet one -- with the romantic comedy Italian for Beginners, which became an art-house hit and won a Silver Bear at the 2001 Berlin International Film Festival.
Scherfig further expanded her audience with her English-language movie An Education, which chalked up Academy Award nominations for Best Picture and Best Adapted Screenplay, along with a Best Director BAFTA nod for Scherfig. The incisive coming-of-age drama also brought its leading lady, Carey Mulligan, a Best Actress Oscar nomination.
