Lorraine Bracco
Lorraine BraccoAn authentic New Yorker, Lorraine Bracco was born Oct. 2, 1954, in Brooklyn, where she struggled with her looks as a young woman before flying to Paris to work as a successful fashion model and make her big-screen debut in the French-language film Duos sur Canape (1979).

It would take nearly a decade for Bracco's film career to catch on in Hollywood, but when it did, it culminated with a plum role as beleaguered mob wife Karen Hill in Martin Scorsese's Goodfellas (1990) -- a performance that earned Bracco an Oscar nomination.

Subsequent parts in Medicine Man (1992), Even Cowgirls Get the Blues (1994) and The Basketball Diaries (1995) led to a high-profile stretch as mobster Tony Soprano's therapist on the hit HBO drama "The Sopranos," a role that brought in a string of Emmy nominations and slowly developed into one of the most intriguing characters on primetime.
