Despite seemingly infinite reserves of ambition and energy, Madonna, the pop star, has never been able to fully reinvent herself as Madonna, the film star. Born Madonna Ciccone on Aug. 16, 1958, in Bay City, Mich., Madonna moved to New York in the late 1970s to study dance and pursue a singing career. In 1985, Madonna played a supporting role very much like herself opposite Rosanna Arquette in Susan Seidelman's Desperately Seeking Susan. Capitalizing on the singer's rising star, the film was a hit and earned Madonna good reviews for her kooky persona. Next up, however, was the critical and financial flop Shanghai Surprise (with her then-husband Sean Penn).
Since then, Madonna has received more Razzies than raves, though high points of her acting career include Dick Tracy, A League of Their Own, Madonna: Truth or Dare and Evita (for which she won a Golden Globe).
