Born in New York City on June 20, 1931, Martin Landau started out as a newspaper cartoonist before being accepted at Lee Strasberg's Actor's Studio in 1955.After making a splash as a villain in Alfred Hitchcock's North by Northwest (1959), Landau signed on to co-star in the infamous Cleopatra (1963), a decision that cost him a part in Federico Fellini's 8½ but led to memorable roles in the biblical epic The Greatest Story Ever Told (1965) and the popular spy show "Mission: Impossible" (1966-69).
His career revived with back-to-back Academy Award nominations for Tucker: The Man and His Dream (1988) and Crimes and Misdemeanors (1989), culminating with an Oscar win for his touching portrayal of aging horror icon Bela Lugosi in the Tim Burton biopic Ed Wood (1994). Other notable films include City Hall (1996), Rounders (1998) and The Majestic (2001).
