As the son of a drive-in cinema operator, Matthew Modine has been immersed in the world of film for most of his life. Born March 22, 1959, in Loma Linda, Calif., Modine dropped out of Brigham Young University and worked odd jobs before moving to New York in 1979, where he began studying with famed acting teacher Stella Adler.After landing roles on soap operas and in commercials, Modine made his feature film debut in the comedy Baby It's You (1983); that same year, he shared a Venice Film Festival Best Actor award with his Streamers castmates. A year later, his portrayal of a disturbed Vietnam veteran in Birdy would become one of the highlights of his career.
More recent roles for Modine include an AIDS researcher in the TV movie And the Band Played On (for which he received an Emmy nod), an unhinged husband in Le Divorce (2003) and a narcotics chief in Transporter 2.
