Landon followed that success by producing, directing, writing and headlining the hit family drama "Little House on the Prairie," endearing himself to millions as sensitive pioneer patriarch Charles Ingalls. A stint on "Highway to Heaven" (1984-1989) ensued, with Landon playing angel-on-a-mission Jonathan Smith alongside his former "Little House" co-star Victor French.
But Landon's career was tragically cut short when he was diagnosed with inoperable pancreatic cancer. He passed away July 1, 1991, at age 54 and was enshrined in the Television Academy Hall of Fame in 1995.
