Despite a long and varied résumé, Hingle may be best known for his big-screen portrayal of Commissioner Gordon in four Batman films, beginning with Tim Burton's Batman in 1989. Other notable credits include Splendor in the Grass, Norma Rae, The Grifters and Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby. He also earned critical acclaim as Benjamin Franklin in the 1997 Broadway revival of the musical "1776."
Hingle died on Jan. 3, 2009, at the age of 84.
