Tougher than any of the characters she's played, Patricia Neal has endured much tragedy (including the death of a child). Born Jan. 20, 1926, in Packard, Ky., Neal studied drama at Northwestern University before making her Broadway debut in 1946. The next year she won a Tony for her turn in "Another Part of the Forest."With her wide cheekbones and even wider grin, Neal was a natural for the big screen, and in 1949, she portrayed an emotionally repressed heiress opposite Gary Cooper in The Fountainhead. In the ensuing years, she would alternate between stage and screen, appearing in Breakfast at Tiffany's and earning a Best Actress Oscar for Hud (1963).
Neal suffered a series of strokes in 1965 that left her partially paralyzed. Making a remarkable recovery, she returned to Oscar-nominated form in 1968's The Subject Was Roses. After a battle with lung cancer, she passed away Aug. 8, 2010.
The FountainheadGary Cooper stoically portrays uncompromising architect Howard Roark, a man obedient solely to his own individuality and unfettered expression, in this adaptation of Ayn Rand's best-selling philosophical allegory. Roark's life is depicted as a series of trials in which he must defend his beliefs and... Read More
