A versatile performer comfortable with both light comedic and darker, more nuanced roles, Paul Bettany was born May 27, 1971, in London to a theater family headed by Thane Bettany, a respected British actor. After several years as a street corner musician, Bettany studied with the Drama Centre and the Royal Shakespeare Company.Good notices for his stage work in "An Inspector Calls" and "Love and Understanding" led to his film debut in Bent (1997) and acclaimed performances in Gangster No. 1 and A Knight's Tale (2001, as Geoffrey Chaucer). Bettany's U.S. breakthrough came as Russell's Crowe's imaginary friend in A Beautiful Mind (2001). They reteamed successfully for Master and Commander in 2003.
Bettany's subsequent films have included Wimbledon (in his first leading-man movie role), Dogville and The Da Vinci Code (2006). He married his Beautiful Mind co-star Jennifer Connelly in 2003.
