Paul Winfield
A commanding African-American actor who hit his stride with an Oscar nomination for Sounder (1972), Paul Winfield was born in Los Angeles on May 22, 1940, and launched his acting career as an artist in residence at Stanford University. His long résumé spans the worlds of theater, television and film.

When Winfield received his Best Actor nod, he added his name to an elite roster of black actors who had been nominated for their work in leading roles. In fact, at the time, there were only two other names on the list: Sidney Poitier and James Earl Jones. Winfield also won an Emmy for a guest role on "Picket Fences" in 1995.

Although he traditionally played straight men and portrayed homosexual characters only twice in his career, Winfield was openly gay in his private life and lived with the same partner for 30 years. Winfield died on March 7, 2004.
