Peggy Ashcroft
Legendary thespian Peggy Ashcroft was born Dec. 22, 1907, in Croyden, England. Noted for her prolific theatrical oeuvre, she made her stage debut in 1926 as part of the Birmingham Repertory Company and was often cast opposite John Gielgud.

Ashcroft debuted on celluloid in The Wandering Jew (1933) and played a minor role in 1935's The 39 Steps (directed by Alfred Hitchcock). Though her film appearances were sporadic, Ashcroft's memorable movie credits include The Nun's Story (1959), Secret Ceremony (1968) and Sunday Bloody Sunday (1971).

In 1984, the esteemed British actress starred in the critically hailed TV miniseries "The Jewel in the Crown," while her first-rate supporting turn in A Passage to India resulted in an Oscar and a Golden Globe Award. Ashcroft died from a stroke June 14, 1991.
