Pernell Roberts
Best known for his role as tight-lipped eldest son Adam Cartwright on the iconic Western series "Bonanza," Pernell Roberts was born May 18, 1928, in Waycross, Ga. Before achieving fame on television, Roberts worked in regional theater and off-Broadway productions, making ends meet during the lean times with odd jobs that ranged from butcher to theater usher.

Hollywood beckoned in 1958 with a meaty supporting part in Desire Under the Elms. A year later, Roberts signed on for a stint on "Bonanza" but stunned and saddened his fans by leaving the highly rated show after fulfilling his six-year contract.

Roberts subsequently found steady work on stage and in TV guest appearances. In 1979, he landed back in America's living rooms on a weekly basis as the title character in "Trapper John, M.D.," a role that brought him an Emmy nomination in 1981. Roberts died of pancreatic cancer Jan. 24, 2010.
