Born in New York City on Sept. 16, 1927, Peter Falk lost his right eye as a child and adopted the custom of wearing a glass eye in its place, a quirk that helped him stand out as a gifted character actor.Falk took up acting later in life but made up for lost time by earning consecutive Oscar nods for Murder, Inc. (1960) and Pocketful of Miracles (1961). Even more impressive, however, is the extensive list of Emmy nominations and wins he racked up playing iconic TV detective Lt. Columbo in the long-running series "Columbo" (1971-78), a role he reprised on and off for nearly 40 years in continuing TV specials.
Other notable Falk films include Husbands (1970), A Woman Under the Influence (1974), the mystery spoof Murder by Death (1976), The In-Laws (1979) and the classic romantic comedy The Princess Bride (1987). Falk died June 23, 2011.
