Phylicia Rashad
Phylicia RashadBorn in Houston on June 19, 1948, to a Pulitzer Prize-nominated poet mother and a dentist father of full-blooded Cherokee heritage, Phylicia Rashad began her career on Broadway, appearing as a munchkin in the original cast of "The Wiz" and in the ensemble of the original cast of "Dreamgirls."

But Rashad is best known to television audiences for her Emmy-nominated portrayal of upper-middle-class matriarch Clair Huxtable in "The Cosby Show" (1984-92), a now-classic sitcom that broke new ground by depicting a black family that was prosperous, playful -- and every bit as complex as white families.

The actress reprised her role as Bill Cosby's wife for "Cosby" (1996-2000) and also lent her voice to Cosby's animated "Little Bill." She earned her third Emmy nod for her work in the TV adaptation of A Raisin in the Sun (2008).
