Good roles were so scarce, in fact, that Winstone considered leaving the profession altogether in the 1980s. But a breakthrough role in a friend's stage play, "Mr. Thomas," kept him afloat and nudged his career in a whole new direction. Both Nil by Mouth (1997) and Sexy Beast (2001) helped cement Winstone's reputation as a respected actor with a knack for creating complex characters.
