Born Charles Langford Modini Stack in Los Angeles on Jan. 13, 1919, to a mother with Hollywood connections, Robert Stack spent part of his childhood under the collective wing of stars turned surrogate mothers and fathers, including Carole Lombard, Clark Gable and Spencer Tracy. He made his film debut in First Love (1939), giving actress-singer Deanna Durbin her first on-screen kiss, and he later earned an Oscar nomination for his performance in Written on the Wind (1956). But Stack found his greatest success on television, first portraying famed crime fighter Eliot Ness in "The Untouchables" (1959-63), then helping to bring down real criminals as host of the Emmy-nominated series "Unsolved Mysteries" (1987-2002).
The actor also poked fun at his serious on-screen persona in comedies such as Airplane! (1980), Caddyshack 2 (1988) and Joe Versus the Volcano (1990). He died May 14, 2003.
