Roy Rogers
Roy RogersBorn Nov. 5, 1911, in Cincinnati -- far from the Wild West -- Roy Rogers began his career as a radio singer in the 1930s after changing his given name, Leonard Slye, to the stage moniker Dick Weston.

But it was under the name Roy Rogers that he became the King of the Cowboys, starring in a string of popular Westerns (starting with 1938's Under Western Stars) that turned him into an American icon. He met his future wife and film partner, radio songbird Dale Evans, on the set of The Cowboy and the Senorita (1944) and later appeared with her in more than 20 movies and on television in "The Roy Rogers Show."

Toward the end of his life, Rogers opened a namesake museum in Southern California that boasted a tribute to his trusty golden palomino, Trigger, who was stuffed and preserved for display after his death. Rogers died from congestive heart failure July 6, 1998.
