Born June 23, 1972, in Southfield, Mich., Selma Blair moved to New York shortly after high school to pursue a career in photography, but soon shifted her focus to acting, studying at the Stella Adler Studio of Acting and the Column Theatre. In the mid-1990s, Blair began to appear in independent films, including Strong Island Boys and Brown's Requiem; in 1999, she got her two big breaks, playing the bashful Cecile in Cruel Intentions and tart-tongued Manhattan teen Zoe Bean in the coming-of-age TV series "Zoe, Duncan, Jack & Jane."
Establishing herself as one of Hollywood's most appealing ingenues, Blair has since appeared opposite Reese Witherspoon in Legally Blonde and with Jason Lee and Julia Stiles in the romantic comedy A Guy Thing. In 2004, Blair starred as paranormal investigator Liz Sherman in the comic book adaptation Hellboy; she reprised her role in the 2008 sequel.
