Spencer Tracy
A favorite among audiences, critics and his peers, Spencer Tracy was born April 5, 1900, in Milwaukee. He settled on an acting career while attending college and played small parts on Broadway until his lead role in "The Last Mile" caught the attention of director John Ford, who cast Tracy in Up the River (1930).

Tracy's breakthrough came in 1932 with the prison yarn 20,000 Years in Sing Sing. After delivering an Oscar-nominated performance in San Francisco (1936), Tracy won back-to-back Best Actor Oscars for Captains Courageous (1937) and Boys Town (1938).

Tracy teamed for the first time with Katharine Hepburn in 1942's Woman of the Year -- the start of a long personal and professional collaboration that produced such memorable movies as Adam's Rib (1949), Desk Set (1957) and Tracy's swan song, Guess Who's Coming to Dinner (1967). The star died from a heart attack June 10, 1967.
