Born Aug. 24, 1958, in Brooklyn, N.Y., Steve Guttenberg launched his big-screen career in the teen sex farce The Chicken Chronicles (1977) and then put his dramatic skills to work in the 1978 thriller The Boys from Brazil. For his role in Diner (1982), director Barry Levinson's insightful homage to the 1950s, Guttenberg earned glowing reviews. But the curly-haired actor is best known for starring in a string of box-office successes in the 1980s: the Police Academy series (1984-'87), Short Circuit (1986) and Three Men and a Baby (1987). Guttenberg continued in the comedy vein during the next decade with turns in Home for the Holidays and It Takes Two (both 1995). In 2003, he tried his hand at directing with P.S. Your Cat Is Dead, an outlandish comedy in which he also starred.
Playing the charismatic owner of a Major League Baseball team, Guttenberg joined the "Veronica Mars" cast in 2005.
