Born in Stepney, England, on July 22, 1938, Terence Stamp made his film debut with an Oscar-nominated role in Billy Budd (1962) and began building his reputation as a serious actor. After playing the menacing Gen. Zod in Superman (1978) and Superman II (1980), Stamp took on a string of villainous roles in films such as Legal Eagles (1986) and Wall Street (1987) before transforming himself into a lip-synching transsexual in The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert (1994).The actor turned in another memorable performance as an unstable ex-convict in Steven Soderbergh's The Limey (1999) -- a role he reprised in the director's Full Frontal (2002) -- before playing Supreme Chancellor Valorum in Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace (1999).
Later roles for Stamp include a turn opposite Jennifer Garner in Elektra (2005) and as Superman's father in the TV drama "Smallville" (2003-06).
