Born in Burbank, Calif., on Aug. 25, 1958, director Tim Burton spent most of his childhood immersed in a quirky inner-world that led to a career as a young animator at Walt Disney Studios -- but it didn't take long for his dark artistic style to break the cute-and-fuzzy cartoon mold.One of his earliest live-action creations, Frankenweenie (1984), caught the eye of comic and children's TV show host Paul Reubens (aka Pee-Wee Herman), who hired him to direct Pee-Wee's Big Adventure (1985). A string of high-profile features followed, including Beetle Juice (1988), Batman (1989), Edward Scissorhands (1990) and the sequel Batman Returns (1992), after which Burton veered from mainstream fare with The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993) and Ed Wood (1994).
Other career highlights include Big Fish (2003), Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005) and the Oscar-nominated Corpse Bride (2005).
