Born in Malibu, Calif., on Aug. 16, 1960, Timothy Hutton followed in his actor father's footsteps and left high school when he was only 16, eventually landing a plum role in Ordinary People (1980) and winning a Best Supporting Actor Oscar -- all before he was 20 years old.Hutton starred alongside Tom Cruise in Taps (1981) and turned down the lead in Risky Business (1983), opting instead for a series of film roles that cemented his reputation as an often brooding "thinking man," including Iceman (1984), The Falcon and the Snowman (1985), Q&A (1990), The Dark Half (1993) and Beautiful Girls (1996). The actor entered new territory as a 1930s detective in the critically acclaimed A&E series "Nero Wolfe" (2001-02) before signing on to the NBC drama "Kidnapped" (2006-07).
Other notable films include The General's Daughter (1999), Kinsey (2004) and The Good Shepherd (2006).
