Born in Chicago on May 31, 1950, Tom Berenger took up acting at the University of Missouri and moved to New York to play off-Broadway roles before finding regular work on the daytime soap "One Life to Live" (1975-76).His screen debut in The Sentinel (1977) led to a significant turn as a killer in Looking for Mr. Goodbar that same year, but it would take several more years -- and roles in The Big Chill (1983) and Oliver Stone's Platoon (1986), which earned him an Oscar nod -- before his leading-man status blossomed.
After playing baseball in Major League (1989) and the sequel, Berenger appeared in At Play in the Fields of the Lord (1991) and the Civil War drama Gettysburg (1993) before switching to television to play Kirstie Alley's beau on "Cheers" for two episodes, receiving an Emmy nod for his efforts.
