Tom Hooper
A critically acclaimed English director who got his start crafting TV commercials, Tom Hooper was born in London in 1972. He resolved to become a filmmaker at age 12 and studied at Oxford, making his way to big-screen projects via television.

Hooper is best known for his deft handling of historical dramas, most notably his ability to avoid clichés and add modern flair without sacrificing accuracy. He won an Emmy Award for directing Helen Mirren in Elizabeth I (2005) and picked up a pair of Emmy nominations for his work on the BBC serial "Prime Suspect 6: The Last Witness" (2004) and the HBO miniseries "John Adams" (2008).

In 2011, Hooper took home his first Oscar for helming The King's Speech, a captivating take on public speaking and royal responsibility based on the life of British monarch King George VI.
