Born Sept. 15, 1946, in San Saba, Texas, Tommy Lee Jones attended St. Mark's Prep School in Dallas and won a scholarship to Harvard (where his roommate was Al Gore). After graduation, Jones appeared on Broadway, made his film debut in Love Story (1970) and appeared on the daytime soap "One Life to Live."From there, Jones went to Los Angeles for roles in television ("The Amazing Howard Hughes") and film (Coal Miner's Daughter, Stormy Monday). As mystery man Clay Shaw in director Oliver Stone's JFK (1991), Jones was nominated for a Best Supporting Actor Oscar; he won the award three years later for his portrayal of Marshal Gerard in The Fugitive -- a part he reprised in U.S. Marshals (1998).
Jones's steely delivery was a perfect foil to Will Smith in the 1997 sci-fi satire Men in Black and its 2002 sequel. He earned a lead-actor Oscar nod for his role in In the Valley of Elah (2006).
