A humble Irish rock quartet that blossomed into one of the biggest bands in the world, U2 is best known for launching an endless string of hits in the 1980s and '90s, including "Sunday, Bloody Sunday," "Pride (In the Name of Love)," "With or Without You," "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For" and "Desire."The foursome of self-taught musicians -- composed of lead singer Paul Hewson aka Bono (1960- ), guitarist David Evans aka the Edge (1961- ), bassist Adam Clayton (1960- ) and drummer Larry Mullen Jr. (1961- ) -- first began making music as a high school cover band in the 1970s before writing and performing their own songs, steadily gaining a loyal fan base with politically direct lyrics and passionate live shows that set them apart from other rock acts of the day.
In the new millennium, the band has also played a prominent philanthropic role in the fight against AIDS in Africa.
