Nicknamed "the human chameleon" because of his ability to shape-shift for various roles, Vincent D'Onofrio gained 70 pounds to play Pvt. Pyle in Full Metal Jacket (1987). Since then, the actor has transformed himself into an amazing range of characters, from the love-struck boyfriend in Mystic Pizza (1988) to baddie Edgar "the Bug" in Men in Black (1997).Born June 30, 1959, in Brooklyn, N.Y., D'Onofrio studied at New York City's American Stanislavski Theatre and the Actors Studio before making his stage debut in the mid-1980s, a period that also marked his entry into films. His fame grew in the '90s with parts in such varied fare as JFK, The Player and The Whole Wide World.
D'Onofrio's later big-screen efforts include The Salton Sea (2002) and The Break-Up (2006). He's probably best known, however, for his portrayal of the intuitive Det. Robert Goren on "Law & Order: Criminal Intent."
