Born March 20, 1950, in Washington, D.C., William Hurt graduated from Tufts University, attended Juilliard and spent his early years in the theater, displaying a particular affection for Shakespeare.Hurt made his film bow in the 1980 horror classic Altered States, which was soon followed by high-profile parts in Eyewitness (1981), Body Heat (1981) and The Big Chill (1983). His next three movies -- Kiss of the Spider Woman (1985), Children of a Lesser God (1986) and Broadcast News (1987) -- each garnered him Academy Award nominations for Best Actor. He won the Oscar for Kiss of the Spider Woman.
Hurt's memorable work has continued with roles in The Accidental Tourist, Until the End of the World and AI: Artificial Intelligence. 2005's A History of Violence earned him another Oscar nod, and his supporting role in "Damages" netted Hurt his first Emmy nomination along with a Golden Globe nod.
